A receipt is a beginning.
In Walden, Henry David Thoreau put a house-cost account on the page, down to a half cent. Boards, nails, windows, transportation. A reader could examine the arithmetic.
He also told the reader what the total left out: his own work, and materials including timber, stones and sand. That sentence matters as much as the number. An itemized cash total is not the full cost of building a house.

A company can publish a beautiful number and still leave its reader guessing. Was that money paid, an estimate, a prepaid balance or the value assigned to someone's time? Which period does it cover? Does it include the work that failed?
Those are the questions I want PHX Good to make easier to ask.

The four questions stay put. The answers change as you choose how much an imagined company reveals. These are editorial scenarios, not scores assigned to real organizations.

What you can see

It takes time to keep that record useful. A public error can be uncomfortable. Privacy and security still require deliberate limits; publishing everything would be a failure of judgment.
What it offers
A reader has a way to challenge the work. A correction becomes something they can follow, and a promise has a date they can return to. That makes trust testable; it does not guarantee it.

Open by habit
Visible: There is a roadmap, a changelog and an occasional account of what went wrong. Some decisions remain unexplained, or arrive only after the people affected needed them.
Cost: Someone chooses what to share. Each choice can be reasonable, yet the accumulated omissions can leave a much cleaner story than the actual work.
Offer: Readers can learn how the product is changing. They still need to ask whether setbacks receive the same attention as releases.
Reader's test: Does the bad news appear on the same schedule as the good?
Required only
Visible: The organization publishes the disclosures that apply to it. Those records can contain valuable evidence, but they may not explain the decision a user is facing today.
Cost: Preparing reliable formal disclosures takes work. Compliance is a meaningful floor, though the existence of a filing does not make every claim in an impact report comparable.
Offer: A reader gets a documented baseline. Understanding its period, definitions and exclusions remains part of the job.
Reader's test: What can this document actually tell me about today's decision?
Guarded
Visible: The product and the success stories are easy to find. The denominator, rejected alternatives and uncompleted commitments take more digging.
Cost: A clean narrative can hide a useful warning. Readers may spend their own time reconstructing context the organization already has.
Offer: Communication is concise and controlled. That can protect sensitive work, but readers need a way to distinguish a justified boundary from an inconvenient omission.
Reader's test: What evidence would change the story I am being shown?
Black box
Visible: You can use the product and read its claims. It is difficult to inspect how a recommendation was reached, which sources support it or how errors are handled.
Cost: When something fails, a user has little context for deciding what to rely on next. For someone preparing a referral, an unexplained answer creates another question to resolve.
Offer: Keeping information private can protect people, security and unfinished work. Secrecy alone is not evidence of dishonesty. The issue is whether people receive enough information to use the service responsibly.

03 · THERE ARE PRECEDENTS
Openness is a practice.
Buffer publishes financial metrics and team salaries. GitLab explains its public-by-default approach and its exceptions in an open handbook. They offer concrete things a reader can inspect. Their existence does not prove that every decision is good, or that one disclosure model fits every organization.
The distinction I care about is between seeing a claim and being able to examine it. A list of tasks tells you that work happened. It does not tell you whether a family got help. A passing software test tells you something about the scenario exercised. It does not tell you whether a provider will accept the next referral.
04 · THE TEST FOR PHX GOOD
Come back and check.
PHX Good is being built for case managers and the people they help in Maricopa County. The Operations record shows plans, costs, evidence and corrections, with gaps still visible. A young project cannot demonstrate years of dependable practice. That record has to be earned over time.
I want the useful numbers close to their limits: what we paid and what is still estimated; what we changed and what was actually observed; what a source says and what we have yet to confirm. The fictional AI roles help organize and challenge the work. I remain responsible for the company decisions.
The privacy boundary stays firm. Client records, private correspondence and confidential service locations do not belong in a public company story. The invitation is to inspect our work, not the people who need it.
